Automobile Association of Singapore-The Safer Roads Industry Taskforce’s Recommendations

Singapore, 2 September 2016 – The Safer Roads Industry Taskforce (SRIT) has made recommendations to promote safer vocational driving through leveraging technology, broadening training and outreach and strengthening company processes to the Government.

Minister for Home Affairs and Law K Shanmugam announced the taskforce’s recommendation at the Singapore Road Safety Council gala dinner and the significance of this development in enhancing the road safety situation in Singapore. It is a shared responsibility for all road users to travel safely in a shared space.

Recognising the need for safer vocational driving, AAS Academy, a wholly owned subsidiary of Automobile Association of Singapore, provides post basic vocational training, with emphasis towards areas of safety, competency and fleet management, for drivers in Singapore and the region. Statistics show that the crash severity and fatality involving commercial vehicles is much higher than cars. Hence, AAS Academy has adopted the Crash Prevention Course from the International Road Transport Union (IRU) Academy.

The Crash Prevention Course has been designed and developed specially for commercial drivers. It aims to increase risk awareness and encourage road safety best practices among commercial drivers to reduce the number of accidents and ultimately save lives.

Since its establishment in July 2015, AAS Academy has been conducting the Crash Prevention Course for commercial drivers. IRU has a presence in 74 countries and offers professional certifications to commercial drivers in the European Union. AAS Academy is IRU’s first and only accredited training institute in Southeast Asia and all its trainers have been accredited and qualified to deliver the Crash Prevention Course.

Besides the IRU, AAS Academy also partners other global road safety organisations like Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) to deliver courses that have been professionally designed and developed to enhance the skills and risk awareness of commercial drivers.

“Supported by such renowned road safety organisations like IRU and RoSPA, drivers can be assured that the training programme offered by the Academy is always relevant and practical not just in our local context, but it can also be applied to driving overseas as well.” said Mr Lee Wai Mun, Chief Executive Officer for AA Singapore, parent company for AAS Academy.

With the aim of improving road safety and higher standards of driving through continuous learning, AAS Academy is adopting the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) framework and will be offering the relevant training courses and programmes locally.

AAS Academy also offers structured training programmes that are designed to improve driving skills, attitude and behaviour to all classes of drivers such as the Driver Risk Management Mini Workshops.
